Brahms

“This is the first step. When I feel the urge within me I begin by appealing directly to my Maker.
4.-7.
5. 7, 8, 6. 11, 7. 12, 8. 13, 9. 14, 10. 17, 18, 15. 25,
16.
26, 17. 29, 30

Immediately after that I feel vibrations that thrill my whole being.
8.-14.
5. 9, 6. 10, 11, 7. 12, 8. 13, 9. 14, 15, 10. 16, 15. 25,
16. 26, 27, 17. 28

These are the Spirit
1.-3. 2, 3, 12.-14. 22, 23, 19.-21. 34, 35
illuminating the soul-power within
1.-3. 3, 11. 21, 12.-14. 22, 18. 33, 19. 34
and in this exalted state,
7. 12, 8. 13, 15. 25
I see clearly what is obscure in my ordinary moods;
1.-3.
then I feel capable of drawing inspiration from above, as Beethoven did.
5. 7, 8, 9, 6. 10, 11, 7. 12, 8. 13, 9. 14, 15, 10. 16, 17, 18,
15. 25, 16. 26, 27, 17. 28, 29, 30

Above all, I realize at such moments the tremendous significance of Jesus’ supreme revelation, ‘I and my Father are one.’
6.-9. 11. 15.-21.

Those vibrations assume the forms of
distinct mental images,

1.-3. 2, 3, 12.-14. 22, 23, 19.-21. 34, 35
after I have formulated my desire and resolve in regard to what I want –
1.-3. 3, 11. 21, 12.-14. 22, 18. 33, 19. 34
namely, to be inspired so that I can compose something that will uplift and benefit humanity – something of permanent value.
6. 10, 11, 9. 14, 15, 16. 26, 27
5. 9, 6. 10, 10. 16, 17, 17. 28, 29
5. 6, 7, 10. 18, 19, 17. 30, 31
4. 4, 5, 11. 20, 21, 18. 32, 33

Straightway the ideas flow in upon me,
directly from God,

7. 8. 15.
6. 9. 16.
and not only do I see distinct themes in my mind’s eye, but they are clothed in the right forms, harmonies and orchestration.
Measure by measure the finished work
is revealed to me.”

5. 7, 8, 9, 6. 10, 11, 7. 12, 8. 13, 9. 14, 15, 10. 16, 17, 18,
15. 25, 16. 26, 27, 17. 28, 29, 30
